The position of Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) Psychologist is in the Extended Care and Rehab Service Line and will serve Knoxville, IA and Des Moines, IA. The incumbent may be stationed at either the Knoxville VA Clinic or Des Moines Campus. The HBPC Psychologist will act as a consultant and primary psychological provider for the HBPC Team, a special population PACT formed to address the healthcare needs of chronically ill Veterans in their homes. The HBPC Psychologist will work with the HBPC Team to provide interdisciplinary assessment and long-term, healthcare management for Veterans who live with chronic disease, psychosocial challenges, and possible cognitive decline. HBPC Psychologist will have a unique role within the HBPC Team as an advocate for, and provider of evidence-based psychological assessment and treatment. The incumbent will operate within the general scope of practice for the discipline described in VA Handbook 5005. This general scope of practice includes diagnosing mental disorders, conducting psychological and neuropsychological assessments, treating mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and providing adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders (Part II, Appendix G18). Among the modalities provided by psychologists are individual, family, and group psychotherapies, and other interventions such as biofeedback, psychological hypnosis, and environmental interventions (e.g. for the management of disruptive behavior). Psychologists also consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Staff psychologists are expected to be involved in program evaluation, performance improvement projects, and psychology internship training.
