Inova Behavioral Health Services is a large and dynamic behavioral health program
based in Northern Virginia and serving the greater Washington, DC metro area. Inova's fivehospital
health system includes a level one trauma center and over 150 ambulatory care sites.
Three of the five hospitals offer inpatient psychiatric units and one contains an inpatient
detoxification center.
Fellows will rotate at Inova's flagship Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, where 41 acute
adult psychiatric beds, 25 detox beds, and 15 child and adolescent beds are provided to the
northern Virginia community. Fellows rotate through all services, a Psychiatric Urgent Care and
emergency department, and a consult liaison service. Through the one-year program, fellows
obtain knowledge and skills necessary for managing mental health disorders across the lifespan.
Rotations
Six rotations are offered, each in two month increments:
- Adult Inpatient
- Addiction Medicine
- Adolescent Psychiatry: Autism Clinic
- Consult Liaison
- Emergency Department Crisis
- Partial Hospitalization Program
Administration
This program is managed by Mary Fisher, Lead APP for Behavioral Health, in conjunction
with Dr. Linda Lang, Chairperson and President, Inova Behavioral Health Services.

Eligibility for NPs:
- Graduate from an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program (MSN or DNP), or eligible at the time of the interview
- Board Certified or eligible for Board Certification at the time of the interview
- VA License
- DEA License
- Board Certification by matriculation
Additional Details
- The vision is to build on the existing knowledge and skills already possessed by the APP
- There will be raining sites through Inova Health system Behavioral health. The Fellow will work with APP and MD preceptors and weekly didactics.
- The goal will be to balance theory and experiences.
- Program will be twelve month.
- The didactics will be weekly and mandatory and a student a fellow and preceptor evaluates after each rotation.
- The fellow will complete psychiatric evaluations and assessments
Behavioral Health Service Line
- Will make treatment recommendations and treatment plans to include medications and therapy.
- Navigate the EMR document assessments and orders. This includes labs imaging medications and consultations and referrals
- Communicate with outpatient and other services and all forms of collateral participate in family meetings.
- Participate in discharge planning with members of the team and complete discharge summaries and all records in the allotted time
